Aston Villa targets Julian Quinones as Manzambi transfer nears completion
Villa's dual pursuit of a $65 million Swiss prospect and a World Cup star signals serious Champions League ambitions under Unai Emery
Aston Villa is making aggressive moves in the transfer market, closing in on a $65 million deal for SC Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi while simultaneously opening talks for Mexican forward Julian Quinones.
The Manzambi deal positions Villa ahead of Newcastle United, who were also reportedly in the hunt for the 20-year-old Swiss midfielder. At $65 million, it’s a significant commitment to a player who hasn’t yet hit his prime.
The Manzambi move
Johan Manzambi, a versatile midfielder and winger currently at SC Freiburg, represents the kind of investment Premier League clubs with European ambitions have been making with increasing frequency. Young, adaptable, and already tested in the Bundesliga.
Emery has been focused on reinforcing both attacking and midfield options, and Manzambi’s ability to operate across multiple positions gives the squad tactical flexibility that Champions League football demands.
The Quinones pursuit
Villa has made initial contact with representatives of Julian Quinones, the Mexican forward who turned heads during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His goal against England, in particular, put him on the radar of clubs across Europe.
Quinones is currently under contract with Saudi club Al-Qadsiah, and his release clause is reportedly around $200 million. Release clauses in Saudi Arabia are often set astronomically high as a negotiating tactic rather than a genuine price expectation.
Villa’s approach so far has been described as exploratory, assessing availability and willingness rather than slapping down a formal bid. No finalized timeline or confirmed transfer fee has emerged from discussions.
What this means for Villa’s trajectory
The risk is overspending during a window of perceived opportunity. Committing $65 million to a 20-year-old and potentially pursuing a deal complicated by a $200 million release clause means Villa’s margin for error is thin.
With Manzambi’s deal approaching the finish line, Emery is already getting at least one of the reinforcements he needs to keep Villa competitive on multiple fronts next season.
