Atlético Madrid rules out transfer for Victor Osimhen this summer
Galatasaray's firm refusal to sell the Nigerian striker leaves the Spanish club scrambling for forward options as Julián Álvarez eyes the exit
Atlético Madrid’s summer transfer plans just hit a wall. The Spanish club has walked away from its pursuit of Victor Osimhen after Galatasaray made it abundantly clear the Nigerian striker is going nowhere.
The collapse of this deal matters beyond just two clubs haggling over a price tag. It leaves one of La Liga’s biggest sides without a credible backup plan at a moment when their current star forward, Julián Álvarez, is openly angling for a move elsewhere.
A €120 million inquiry that went nowhere
Atlético formally approached Galatasaray with a €120 million inquiry for Osimhen on June 11. That’s roughly 60% more than what the Turkish club paid to sign him permanently from Napoli in July 2025 for €75 million.
Club president Dursun Özbek shut the door with the kind of finality that doesn’t leave much room for interpretation, stating that Osimhen “is not available for transfer this summer.” Head coach Okan Buruk reinforced the message, noting that no official offer had even been received for the striker.
Osimhen remains under contract with Galatasaray until 2029. That long-term deal gives the Turkish side enormous leverage. They don’t need to sell, they don’t want to sell, and they’ve made sure everyone knows it.
The Julián Álvarez problem
Atlético wasn’t shopping for Osimhen just because they wanted to stack their squad with elite forwards. This was a contingency plan, and the contingency they’re planning for is looking increasingly likely.
Julián Álvarez publicly expressed his desire to leave Atlético Madrid in June 2026. The Argentine forward has framed his potential departure around achieving personal ambitions.
Osimhen was the obvious answer. A proven scorer who thrived in Serie A with Napoli before making the move to Turkey, he combined the physicality, movement, and finishing instincts that Simeone’s system demands. With that option now firmly off the table, Atlético finds itself needing a high-caliber forward in a market where every seller knows you’re desperate.
Why Galatasaray is holding firm
When Galatasaray signed Osimhen permanently for €75 million, it was one of the largest transfer fees in Turkish football history. Selling him now, even for a €45 million markup, would undermine the sporting project that justified spending that much in the first place.
What this means for the summer transfer window
Atlético now faces a multi-layered challenge. If Álvarez follows through on his stated desire to leave, the club will need to identify, negotiate for, and sign a top-tier forward without a backup plan already in place.
If Atlético was willing to explore a €120 million deal for Osimhen, the budget exists for a major signing. But available talent at that price point is thin.
