Atlético Madrid targets two new midfielders this summer
Diego Simeone's side is eyeing Bernardo Silva and several other midfield options as the club continues an aggressive squad rebuild
Atlético Madrid is going shopping for midfielders this summer, and the wish list reads like a who’s who of European talent. The club plans to bring in two central midfield reinforcements ahead of the 2026/27 season, with Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva sitting at the top of the shortlist.
Here’s the thing about Silva: his contract with City expires on June 30, 2026, making him available on a free transfer. For a club that has already signed 16 players over the last two transfer windows, adding a player of Silva’s caliber without a transfer fee would be, to put it mildly, a significant win.
The target list
Silva is the headline name, but he’s far from the only midfielder on Atlético’s radar. The club has been linked with Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP, Brighton’s Matt O’Riley, who is valued at around €30 million, and Aleix Garcia from Bayer Leverkusen.
The Barcelona problem
There’s a complication, and its name is Barcelona. The Catalan club is also reportedly interested in Bernardo Silva, which means Atlético could find itself in a bidding war. Not over a transfer fee, since Silva would be a free agent, but over wages and the general appeal of the project.
Barcelona’s interest doesn’t stop at Silva either. Both clubs have been linked with Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, suggesting their transfer strategies are overlapping in multiple positions this summer.
What this means for investors and the transfer market
Atlético’s approach over the past two transfer windows tells a clear story. Sixteen new faces in two seasons is not a club making incremental adjustments. This is a full-scale squad renovation, orchestrated by sporting director Andrea Berta and backed by Simeone’s vision for what the team needs to compete at the highest level.
The financial dynamics are worth watching too. A free transfer for Silva, if it materializes, would represent enormous value. Meanwhile, O’Riley’s €30 million price tag gives a sense of the market rate for the other targets.
