Craig Bellamy’s move to Burnley falls through, club shifts focus to Steve Cooper and Rob Edwards
Burnley's managerial search takes an unexpected turn as talks with the Wales head coach collapse and two new candidates emerge
Burnley’s pursuit of Craig Bellamy is dead. The Championship club, searching for a new manager since Scott Parker’s departure in April, has pivoted away from the Wales head coach and turned its attention to Steve Cooper and Rob Edwards.
How Burnley got here
The managerial vacancy at Turf Moor opened up on April 30, 2026, when Scott Parker and the club mutually parted ways. Burnley had just been relegated from the Premier League.
Bellamy, who took over as Wales head coach in 2024, had already turned down club-level propositions earlier in June 2026. Burnley’s approach apparently carried enough weight to get him to the negotiating table, with the club entering advanced discussions with the Football Association of Wales in mid-to-late June 2026. Then everything unraveled. The specifics of why talks broke down remain unclear, but the outcome is definitive: Bellamy is staying put with Wales, and Burnley is back to square one.
The new shortlist: Cooper and Edwards
With Bellamy off the table, Burnley has turned its gaze toward two candidates with relevant experience: Steve Cooper and Rob Edwards.
Cooper is the more immediately available option. He exited Danish club Brøndby in 2026 and is currently unattached, meaning Burnley would not need to pay a compensation fee to secure his services.
Rob Edwards represents a different profile. His experience managing in the Championship gives him a familiarity with the division.
The Wales domino effect
The FAW, far from sitting idle while Burnley courted their head coach, had already begun exploring contingency plans, holding informal discussions about potential replacements for Bellamy before the Burnley deal had even collapsed.
Cooper’s name surfaced in those conversations too. The absence of a compensation fee and his current availability made him a logical candidate for the FAW to consider. Now that Bellamy is staying with Wales, those FAW contingency plans get filed away.
