Celtic offers Kelechi Iheanacho a new two-year contract worth £35K per week
The Nigerian striker turned down richer deals from Gulf and Turkish clubs to stay in Glasgow, highlighting a growing trend of athletes choosing legacy over paycheck
Celtic FC has put a new two-year deal on the table for Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho, offering £35,000 per week in base salary plus performance bonuses that could reach £780,000. The 29-year-old striker, who scored 7 goals in his debut season at Celtic Park, appears set to stay in Scotland rather than chase bigger paychecks elsewhere.
The deal and what Iheanacho walked away from
Iheanacho’s previous arrangement was a one-year contract signed in the summer of 2025, with an option for a 12-month extension. That deal expired on June 30, 2026, making him a free agent and opening the door to competing offers.
Those offers came. Clubs in Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia reportedly dangled richer terms. Iheanacho said no to all of it. His approximate annual base salary under the new Celtic deal sits at roughly £1.82 million, a figure that almost certainly pales next to what Gulf clubs were offering.
