CFTC opens fresh investigation into Polymarket’s marketing practices
Bipartisan senators push for a fresh investigation into the prediction market giant over allegations of fake winning-bet videos
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has opened an investigation into prediction market operator Polymarket, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing a person familiar with the matter. The source did not reveal when the inquiry began.
The probe follows recent scrutiny over Polymarket’s marketing practices after reports claimed the company used influencers in promotional videos that portrayed successful trades even though no real money had been wagered.
Polymarket said it was reviewing all active promotional content to ensure it complies with company policies and applicable regulatory disclosure requirements.
The probe comes despite Polymarket making progress with US regulators over the past year. After being banned from serving American users in 2022 for operating without proper registration, previous CFTC and Department of Justice investigations were closed last July without enforcement action.
In December 2025, Polymarket rolled out a CFTC-regulated exchange for US customers and later opened public access to its iOS application for users across more than 40 eligible US states.
