Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirms Garnacho will leave this summer
The Argentine winger's £40 million move from Manchester United lasted just one season as Chelsea's squad overhaul continues under new management
Chelsea’s revolving door of talent keeps spinning. New manager Xabi Alonso confirmed during a press conference on July 13 that winger Alejandro Garnacho will leave Stamford Bridge this summer, barely a year after arriving from Manchester United for £40 million.
The Argentine attacker managed just 8 goals and 4 assists across 43 appearances in his debut season.
What Alonso actually said
Alonso was characteristically direct about the situation. Garnacho is simply not part of his plans going forward.
The decision was reportedly mutual, and Garnacho has already been excluded from preseason training as both sides work toward a clean break.
Chelsea is seeking a permanent transfer rather than a loan arrangement. The club has reportedly set a valuation of approximately €50 million, which translates to roughly £42.5 million to £45 million.
Where could Garnacho end up
Serie A appears to be the most likely destination. Both Roma and Napoli have been linked with interest in the 21-year-old, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Sky Sports, and The Athletic that surfaced between July 11 and 13.
Chelsea’s bigger picture under Alonso
Offloading fringe players like Garnacho for permanent fees rather than loans is a meaningful strategic choice. Permanent sales generate revenue, free up wage bill space, and send a clear message to the rest of the squad about expectations.
