Coinbase announced Friday that it has secured a Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) license from Luxembourg’s Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF), the country’s main financial regulator tasked with supervising and regulating the financial sector.

With this license, the leading US exchange can now roll out its full portfolio of crypto products and services across all 27 EU countries, unlocking access to a potential market of 450 million people, the company said.

Coinbase is also anchoring its European hub in Luxembourg as part of its MiCA-compliant growth plan in the EU. The move reinforces the region’s position as a maturing global crypto market with increasing institutional credibility.

Luxembourg has emerged as a strategic choice for Coinbase’s European operations, having passed four blockchain-related policies through its national legislature. The country has adopted a “whole-of-government approach” to blockchain and distributed ledger technology, according to Coinbase.

“This new hub represents a landmark step forward for Coinbase in Europe and strengthens the broader innovation ecosystem,” Coinbase said in the announcement.

The company had previously obtained licenses in several European countries, including Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.

A number of other major crypto exchanges are also operating in compliance with MiCA, including Bybit, OKX, Crypto.com, and Bitstamp. OKX and Crypto.com selected Malta as their European base for MiCA licensing, while Bybit chose Austria.
