Colombia qualifies for World Cup knockout stage after DR Congo win, but fan token market remains untapped
Daniel Muñoz's 76th-minute goal sends Colombia through to the knockouts for just the fourth time in World Cup history, while neither team has launched blockchain-based fan engagement tokens
Colombia is heading to the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A 1-0 victory over DR Congo in their Group K clash on June 24 secured advancement with a game still to play, and it took just one moment of quality to get there.
Daniel Muñoz found the back of the net in the 76th minute. The result gives Colombia six points from two group matches, placing them atop Group K heading into their final fixture.
A historic run takes shape
This is only the fourth time Colombia has reached the knockout stage of a World Cup.
After the match, Lorenzo praised his team’s attacking variety and their composure under pressure. Colombia now needs just a draw against Portugal to finish first in Group K.
The match itself was the first-ever World Cup meeting between Colombia and DR Congo.
Prediction markets had placed Colombia as favorites heading into the fixture, with an approximate 65% implied probability of victory.
The fan token gap neither team has filled
Neither Colombia nor DR Congo has launched an official fan token on Chiliz or any comparable blockchain platform.
Fan tokens have become a staple of engagement strategy for European football clubs and several national teams. Holders get voting rights on minor club decisions, access to exclusive content, and a sense of digital membership.
Portugal, Argentina, and several other World Cup participants have active fan tokens that see increased trading volume during tournament play. Colombia and DR Congo are sitting that dance out entirely.
