Borussia Dortmund considers Jadon Sancho return, prioritizes youth development

The German club is reportedly evaluating the winger as a free agent option, banking on a reunion that worked brilliantly the first time around

Borussia Dortmund is looking at bringing Jadon Sancho back to Signal Iduna Park. The German club is reportedly weighing a move for the English winger once his Manchester United contract expires in summer 2026, a reunion that could give both parties exactly what they need.

The case for a reunion

The numbers from Sancho’s first stint at Dortmund tell a compelling story. Between 2017 and 2021, the winger scored 50 goals in 137 appearances for the club, totalling 120 goal contributions across 158 matches.

Then Manchester United came calling with a £73 million move in 2021, and things went sideways. Sancho struggled for consistent playing time at Old Trafford, eventually finding himself frozen out entirely during a very public falling out with former manager Erik ten Hag.

What followed was a series of loan moves. First came a loan back to Dortmund in 2024, then a spell at Chelsea during the 2024-25 season, and most recently a stint at Aston Villa for the 2025-26 campaign.

Manchester United opted not to trigger a one-year extension on Sancho’s contract, effectively making him a free agent this summer.

Dortmund’s sporting director has indicated the club is conducting ongoing analysis regarding a potential re-signing. Coach Niko Kovac is reportedly open to welcoming Sancho back into the fold, and the player himself has shown interest in returning to the Bundesliga.

Sancho would likely need to agree to a reduced salary compared to what he earned at Manchester United.

Dortmund’s balancing act between youth and experience

Dortmund has built its modern identity on being one of Europe’s premier talent factories. The club’s youth academy has produced or developed players like Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham, names that now anchor some of the biggest clubs on the continent.

Signing a 26-year-old Sancho on a free transfer does not necessarily contradict this philosophy. Sancho himself was once the bright-eyed teenager in that setup, having transitioned from Manchester City’s youth system to Dortmund in 2017.
