Esports giant Falcons skips PGL Masters Bucharest as crypto sponsorships fade from competitive gaming

Esports giant Falcons skips PGL Masters Bucharest as crypto sponsorships fade from competitive gaming

The world's top-ranked Counter-Strike team declining a $1.25 million tournament reflects a broader shift in how elite esports orgs approach both competition and sponsorship deals.

Team Falcons, the Saudi Arabia-based esports powerhouse currently sitting at the No. 1 spot in HLTV’s world rankings, has declined its invitation to PGL Masters Bucharest 2026. They are the only top-ranked team to do so.

The tournament, scheduled for April 4-11 in Romania, carries a $1.25 million prize pool and features 16 teams, with 12 receiving direct invites. Falcons won this exact event last year, dismantling G2 in a clean 3-0 grand final sweep.

The strategic calculus behind sitting out

Falcons has been on a tear. They claimed the HLTV world No. 1 ranking for the first time this year and have won back-to-back Esports World Cup club championships.

The other 11 directly invited teams all accepted. That makes Falcons’ absence conspicuous.

The crypto sponsorship retreat

Falcons signed a $15 million sponsorship agreement with Crypto.com back in 2021. Falcons has distanced itself from blockchain partnerships ahead of this year’s competitive calendar. The PGL Masters Bucharest event itself has no direct crypto tokens or blockchain integrations associated with it.

Falcons, founded in 2017 and funded through strategic regional investments, has the financial backing to be selective about both tournaments and sponsors.
