Fenerbahçe reviews Mason Greenwood’s salary demands amid transfer tug-of-war with Roma
The Turkish club's €35 million bid faces hurdles as Greenwood's wage expectations and a rival offer from AS Roma complicate the deal
Fenerbahçe wants Mason Greenwood. They just don’t want to pay what he’s asking.
The Turkish Super Lig giants have tabled a bid of €35 million plus €5 million in performance-related add-ons for the former Manchester United forward, who is currently under contract with Olympique Marseille until 2029. But here’s the thing: Fenerbahçe considers Greenwood’s salary demands too steep and will only continue negotiations if he agrees to take a pay cut.
The numbers behind the standoff
Greenwood currently earns an estimated €5.45 million gross per year at Marseille. Fenerbahçe’s offer reportedly sits at around €5 million net plus bonuses, which on paper looks like a raise. But the player’s camp apparently wants more, and the Turkish club isn’t willing to budge upward.
Meanwhile, Marseille values Greenwood somewhere between €50 million and €55 million. That means Fenerbahçe’s opening bid of €35 million plus add-ons falls well short of the French club’s asking price, even at the lower end of their valuation range.
Manchester United holds a 50% sell-on clause on profits exceeding the original £26.6 million fee they received when Greenwood moved to Marseille. So any deal significantly above that threshold puts money back into United’s pocket, which gives Marseille less incentive to sell cheaply and every incentive to drive the price as high as possible.
Roma enters the chat
Fenerbahçe isn’t the only club circling. AS Roma has reportedly reached an agreement on personal terms with Greenwood for a deal starting at €4 million net annually, alongside performance bonuses.
That’s actually less than what Fenerbahçe is offering on the salary front. The Roma agreement on personal terms doesn’t mean a transfer is done, of course. The Italian club still needs to agree a fee with Marseille, and that same €50-55 million valuation applies to everyone.
Football politics and fan tokens
Fenerbahçe’s pursuit of Greenwood has become entangled with the club’s upcoming presidential election. Candidate Hakan Safi has claimed publicly that a personal agreement with Greenwood has been secured, contingent on Safi winning the election.
Fenerbahçe also operates in the growing intersection of football and digital assets, having launched a fan token that connects the club to the broader crypto and blockchain ecosystem. Fan tokens tied to clubs like Fenerbahçe tend to see price movement around major transfer news, squad announcements, and election outcomes.
What to watch
The gap between Fenerbahçe’s bid and Marseille’s valuation is significant. We’re talking about a €10-15 million shortfall before add-ons.
Roma’s involvement changes the calculus for everyone. If the Italian club submits a formal bid closer to Marseille’s asking price, Fenerbahçe either needs to escalate dramatically or walk away. And asking Greenwood to take a pay cut becomes an even tougher sell when a competitor is offering comparable wages.
The presidential election at Fenerbahçe adds a wild card that makes timing unpredictable.
