France marks 50th knockout game at World Cups and Euros under Deschamps
Didier Deschamps reaches a historic milestone as France storms through 2026 World Cup group stage
France has hit a number that puts Didier Deschamps in rarefied air. The team just qualified for its 50th knockout-stage match across World Cups and European Championships during his tenure as head coach.
How France got here
Deschamps took over as France’s head coach in July 2012. The milestone arrived at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. France sealed their knockout-round berth after winning group-stage matches against Senegal and Iraq, with the final group fixture taking place on June 26, 2026.
Deschamps’ resume includes a World Cup victory in 2018, when France beat Croatia in the final, and a runner-up finish at UEFA Euro 2016, where they fell to Portugal on home soil.
A bittersweet moment for Deschamps
The achievement comes during a difficult personal period for Deschamps. On June 23, 2026, the coach’s mother passed away, forcing him to temporarily step away from the squad.
He missed France’s final group game against Norway. Assistant coach Guy Stephan filled in on an interim basis, keeping the operation running while Deschamps attended his mother’s funeral.
What 50 knockout games actually means
To reach 50 such games, you need to consistently emerge from group stages. Even elite teams stumble. Germany was eliminated in the group stage of consecutive World Cups in 2018 and 2022. Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments entirely.
The squad that won in 2018, built around the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, and a young Kylian Mbappe, looks very different from the group competing in 2026.
