Gen.G’s esports roster shake-up highlights growing intersection of competitive gaming and web3
The South Korean esports powerhouse swaps players mid-season while its Theta Labs blockchain partnership quietly builds fan engagement infrastructure in the background
Gen.G Esports is rolling out roster changes for VCT Pacific Stage 2, bringing back a player who stepped away from competition for years.
Kim Nak-yeon, known as Efina, officially joined the Gen.G active roster on July 9. He’s replacing ZynX, who’s dealing with a wrist injury.
The roster math
Efina played professionally from 2020 to 2021 before stepping away entirely, only returning to competition in 2024. His total career prize winnings sit at roughly $15,659.
Alongside Efina, Gen.G promoted RaxcaL from its academy team to replace Lakia on the active roster.
The Theta Labs connection
Gen.G has been working with Theta Labs since June 3, 2025, on a partnership that blends blockchain technology with fan engagement. The collaboration involves building an AI mascot and web3 tools designed to deepen how fans interact with the organization.
Theta Network operates as a decentralized video delivery network. Competitive gaming lives and dies by streaming infrastructure, creating exactly the kind of bandwidth demands that decentralized content delivery was theoretically built to solve.
There is no direct link between the roster changes and any token activity related to the Theta partnership. The roster moves are pure competitive strategy, while the blockchain work runs on a separate track entirely.
