Goldman Sachs names Michael Bosworth acting general counsel as Kathy Ruemmler exits amid Epstein scrutiny
The Wall Street giant's top legal role changes hands after its chief legal officer stepped down following renewed attention to her ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Goldman Sachs has tapped Michael Bosworth to serve as acting general counsel, effective July 2026. He replaces Kathy Ruemmler, who resigned from the chief legal officer role effective June 30 after mounting scrutiny over her connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
Who is Michael Bosworth
Bosworth joined Goldman Sachs in 2022 after a stint at Latham & Watkins LLP. At Goldman, he’s been responsible for overseeing litigation, employment law, and global legal functions.
Goldman has signaled that Bosworth’s appointment is temporary. The firm plans to conduct a search for a permanent general counsel, though no timeline has been publicly disclosed for when that process might conclude.
The Ruemmler departure
Ruemmler joined Goldman in 2020 after serving as White House Counsel under President Obama, bringing serious government credentials to the role. She was elevated to the firm’s Management Committee, Goldman’s inner circle of senior leadership.
Department of Justice files surfaced connections between Ruemmler and Jeffrey Epstein, drawing sustained public and media scrutiny. Ruemmler announced her departure with an effective date of June 30, 2026. Despite the exit, CEO David Solomon reportedly asked her to remain in an advisory capacity during the transition period.
Ruemmler received a $25 million pay package for 2025 before her exit.
