Guillermo Ochoa set to play in 6th World Cup this summer
The 40-year-old Mexican goalkeeper joins Messi and Ronaldo as the only players to appear in six FIFA World Cups
Guillermo Ochoa is about to do something only two other footballers in history have managed. The Mexican goalkeeper has been selected for his sixth FIFA World Cup squad, placing him in a club so exclusive that his only company is Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Mexico announced their 26-player roster on May 31 and June 1, and Ochoa’s name was on it. He will be 41 years old during the tournament.
Two decades of World Cup football
Ochoa’s World Cup journey started back in 2006. Since then, he’s been a fixture for Mexico in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022.
Over the course of his international career, Ochoa has accumulated more than 150 caps for Mexico.
The 2026 World Cup is being co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Mexico’s opening match is scheduled for June 11 against South Africa at Estadio Azteca.
The retirement announcement
Ochoa has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be his last act on the international stage. He plans to retire from national team duty after the tournament concludes. There are also indications that he may hang up his gloves at the club level as well.
A historic class of six-timers
Ochoa is standing alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of only three players to participate in six World Cups. To appear in six, a player needs to be good enough for national team selection across a span of at least 20 years.
