Hussein Ammouta appointed Al Ahly head coach on $1.2M deal
The Moroccan tactician takes the reins at Africa's most decorated club on a one-year contract following Jess Thorup's departure
Al Ahly, the most titled football club on the African continent, has named Hussein Ammouta as its new head coach. The Moroccan manager lands in Cairo on a one-year deal worth approximately $1.2 million, stepping into one of the highest-pressure roles in African football.
The appointment caps a rapid managerial transition for the Egyptian giants, who parted ways with Danish coach Jess Thorup by mutual agreement after settling his contractual dues.
From negotiation to confirmation in days
Reports from June 9-10, 2026, indicated that negotiations between Ammouta and Al Ahly had reached roughly 95% agreement, with final discussions taking place in Cairo.
Early media reports had suggested the two sides were working on a two-year contract valued at around $210,000 per month. The final structure landed differently: a single year, with a release clause pegged at three months’ compensation, putting the exit fee at around $300,000.
Ammouta isn’t arriving alone. His coaching staff includes four members: an assistant coach, a fitness coach, a goalkeeping coach, and a performance analyst.
A proven winner with continental pedigree
Born on October 24, 1969, Ammouta won the CAF Champions League in 2017. More recently, he managed the Jordan national team from 2023 to 2024, followed by a stint at Al Jazira from 2024 to 2025.
