Ibrahim Maza named Superior Player of the Match by fans as MAZA token lurks on Ethereum
A 19-year-old midfielder's World Cup breakout has fans voting on TikTok and a namesake crypto token sitting dormant on-chain.
Ibrahim Maza, the 19-year-old Algerian midfielder, was selected as the fan-voted Superior Player of the Match during Algeria’s FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage campaign. The results were shared primarily on TikTok, part of FIFA’s ongoing experiment with digital fan engagement during the tournament in North America.
Meanwhile, a low-profile Ethereum-based token bearing the name “MAZA” exists on-chain. It currently shows no meaningful trading activity and has no verified connection to the footballer or his representatives.
The player behind the hype
Maza plays for Bayer Leverkusen, having joined the German club in 2025 after coming through Hertha BSC’s academy in his hometown of Berlin. He carries Algerian-Vietnamese heritage, a multicultural background that has become part of his growing narrative as an emerging talent in international football.
His standout moment so far came during Algeria’s June 17 match against Argentina. Maza assisted on what would have been a goal, only for it to be disallowed. Algeria lost the match 3-0, with Lionel Messi’s hat-trick dominating the headlines and traditional sports coverage.
Through TikTok-based voting, fans selected Maza as their choice for Superior Player of the Match. Coverage of Maza’s fan-voted recognition has remained largely contained within FIFA’s official social media channels and a handful of specialized sports outlets.
The token nobody asked for
An Ethereum-based token called MAZA exists. It currently exhibits no trading volume and no significant market presence.
There is no evidence linking this token to Ibrahim Maza, his management, Bayer Leverkusen, or any official sports entity.
What this means for investors
Investors should treat any athlete-named token with extreme skepticism unless there is a verified, public partnership between the token project and the athlete or their representatives. In the case of MAZA, no such partnership exists based on available information.
