Leeds plots £43M bid for Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande
The newly promoted club is preparing a club-record offer that would nearly double what Sporting originally paid for the 22-year-old defender
Leeds United is preparing to shatter its own transfer record with a £43 million bid for Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande, a move that would signal the club’s ambitions are operating on a very different frequency than your typical promoted side.
The proposed deal, structured as £35 million upfront plus £8 million in add-ons, would comfortably eclipse the £35.5 million Leeds paid for Georginio Rutter back in 2022.
The target and the competition
Diomande, 22, has developed into one of the more coveted defensive prospects in European football since arriving at Sporting from Danish side Midtjylland for £11 million.
The Ivory Coast international’s progression at Sporting has been rapid enough to attract interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Manchester United, and Newcastle United.
Diomande’s release clause sits at €80 million, which translates to roughly £69 million. Leeds’ proposed bid of £43 million doesn’t come close to triggering that clause, which means Sporting would need to voluntarily accept a figure that’s nearly half the price they’ve contractually protected themselves with.
The defender signed a four-and-a-half-year extension in January 2026, tying him to Sporting until 2029/30.
Why this deal is complicated
Portuguese outlet A Bola first reported the details of Leeds’ interest, with UK media picking up the story around June 10-11. Sporting has reportedly been shifting terms during discussions. No official bid has been confirmed yet.
At £43 million versus a £69 million buyout, Leeds would need Sporting to accept roughly 62% of the player’s contractual exit price.
