Manchester City hires Enzo Maresca’s full coaching staff, including former goalkeeper Willy Caballero
The Premier League club's managerial transition from Pep Guardiola carries a price tag north of £17 million and a six-person backroom team with deep ties to their new boss.
Manchester City has confirmed that former goalkeeper Willy Caballero and five other coaching staff members have officially joined Enzo Maresca’s backroom team at the Etihad Stadium. The appointments complete the infrastructure around Maresca, who was named City’s new head coach on June 29, succeeding Pep Guardiola after his legendary tenure.
The deal and the backroom
City reportedly paid Chelsea more than £17 million, roughly €20 million, to secure Maresca’s release from his contract at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca signed a three-year deal that runs through summer 2029. His inner circle of six coaching allies includes Caballero, Roberto Vitiello, Danny Walker, Michele De Bernardin, Marcos Alvarez, and Javi Molina.
Caballero’s return to Manchester City carries a certain narrative symmetry. The Argentine goalkeeper played for City before transitioning into coaching, and he’s worked alongside Maresca at both Leicester City and Chelsea.
Maresca’s managerial resume includes stints at Parma, Leicester City, and Chelsea before his return to Manchester. He also led Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad to a Premier League 2 title in 2021, which means he already has institutional knowledge of the club’s academy pipeline and development philosophy.
