Manchester United interested in Bruno Guimarães amid Arsenal talks
Newcastle's captain has become the most coveted midfielder in the Premier League, but the Magpies aren't answering the phone
Bruno Guimarães is the midfielder everyone wants and no one can have. Both Manchester United and Arsenal have set their sights on Newcastle United’s captain this summer, but the Magpies have made their position abundantly clear: he’s not for sale.
Arsenal reportedly held direct talks with Guimarães’ representatives on June 25, making the north London club the latest suitor to test Newcastle’s resolve. Manchester United, meanwhile, has been circling for months, with links to the Brazilian dating back to earlier this year and a potential price tag of around €80 million floating around various reports.
Guimarães arrived at St. James’ Park from Lyon in January 2022 for a base fee of €40 million. In the years since, he’s evolved from a promising acquisition into the heartbeat of Eddie Howe’s project, eventually earning the captain’s armband.
The math tells the story of his value appreciation. A player signed for €40 million is now generating interest at the €80 million mark from Manchester United alone. That’s a doubling of his perceived worth in roughly four years.
The 28-year-old is contracted until 2029, which gives the club enormous leverage in any negotiation they don’t want to have in the first place. Newcastle hasn’t named a price. They’ve simply said no.
For Arsenal, the fact that the club went directly to the player’s representatives indicates this isn’t casual window shopping. It’s targeted recruitment with a specific role in mind.
Reports from March 2026 placed Manchester United in advanced discussions, with Real Madrid also reportedly interested at the time. That United remain in the conversation months later suggests their interest survived whatever front-office reshuffling and strategic recalibration happened in the interim.
No formal bids have been recorded as of the latest reports, which means this entire saga is still in the “interest and talks” phase.
