Manchester United faces tougher task in pursuit of Angelo Stiller after release clause expiration
The expired €36.5 million release clause shifts negotiating power to Stuttgart, and the situation highlights why football's transfer market is increasingly resembling derivatives trading.
Manchester United’s summer just got more expensive. The Premier League club can no longer trigger Angelo Stiller’s €36.5 million release clause at VfB Stuttgart after it expired on July 15, putting the German club firmly in the driver’s seat for any transfer negotiations.
The 25-year-old German international midfielder is now effectively locked behind Stuttgart’s pricing wall until summer 2027, when the clause is expected to reactivate. In the meantime, Stuttgart can name whatever price it wants.
The mechanics of the missed window
Stiller’s contract included a fixed-fee exit mechanism at €36.5 million. With that option now expired, Stuttgart holds all the cards.
Stuttgart reportedly had the ability to buy out the clause itself for a nominal €2-4 million, which would effectively remove the ceiling on Stiller’s asking price. The club’s estimated valuation for the midfielder without the clause sits around €50 million, a roughly 37% premium over the expired release figure.
For United, that’s the difference between a structured deal and an open-market bidding war. Juventus has also been linked with the midfielder, meaning Stuttgart could leverage competing interest to push the price even higher.
Stiller’s contract runs through at least 2027-2028, which means Stuttgart faces zero pressure to sell.
What to watch from here
The immediate question is whether United will pay the premium or wait for the clause to reactivate in 2027. Patience could save roughly €13.5 million, but it also gives competitors another year to make their own moves.
Stuttgart’s negotiating position is enviable. With a contract extending through at least 2027-2028 and no active release clause until next summer, they can set the terms entirely.
For United, the calculus is straightforward but uncomfortable. Pay the Stuttgart premium now, or risk losing Stiller to Juventus or another bidder willing to meet the higher valuation. The expired clause didn’t just close a window. It opened a much more expensive door.
