Marcus Rashford rejects move to Tottenham amid Premier League interest
The Manchester United forward reportedly prefers a return to Barcelona or a move to Bayern Munich over staying in the Premier League.
Marcus Rashford has drawn a line in the sand. The 28-year-old Manchester United forward does not want to transfer to another Premier League club, and that includes Tottenham Hotspur, who have been monitoring his situation this summer.
He wants out of England entirely, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich reportedly topping his shortlist of preferred destinations.
The money and the mechanics
Manchester United have agreed to a £40 million release clause in his contract. Tottenham are reportedly not willing to meet it.
Rashford’s salary is set to rise to £325,000 per week — roughly £17 million a year.
For Manchester United, they want Rashford off the books to ease their wage burden. He wants to leave but only on his terms. And the clubs he actually wants to join haven’t yet triggered that release clause.
Barcelona, Bayern, or staying put
Rashford previously spent a loan spell at Barcelona during the 2025-26 season, scoring 14 goals. Barcelona is reportedly his top choice.
Bayern Munich represents the other path, offering a different style of play and Champions League pedigree.
If neither Barcelona nor Bayern come calling with the right offer, and if Rashford continues to refuse Premier League alternatives, Old Trafford becomes the default outcome.
Why Tottenham was never the answer
Tottenham were not prepared to activate the £40 million release clause. Rashford has also refused to consider any Premier League club, ruling out a move to Spurs regardless of financial terms.
What to watch this summer
Reports suggest that United may pressure Rashford to reconsider his options as the transfer window progresses. United don’t want to carry £325,000 per week for a player they’re trying to move on.
Barcelona’s ability to take on Rashford’s wages is far from guaranteed. The £40 million release clause could equally be a sticking point for Bayern Munich.
