Matt Freese starts in goal for US at World Cup after unique journey
The Harvard-educated goalkeeper became the first Ivy League alumnus and first active MLS keeper to start a World Cup match for the USMNT
When the US Men’s National Team took the field against Paraguay on June 12, the man between the posts wasn’t a product of a European academy or a household name plucked from the Premier League. It was Matt Freese, a 27-year-old New York City FC goalkeeper who once roamed the campus of Harvard University. The US won 4-1, and Freese played all 90 minutes.
From Cambridge to the World Cup
Freese, born in Wayne, Pennsylvania, enrolled at Harvard in 2016. He played 16 matches for the Crimson and earned Second Team All-Ivy honors. He left Harvard after two years to pursue professional soccer.
His first stop was the Philadelphia Union, where he spent years largely as a backup. He eventually moved to New York City FC. During the 2025 MLS season, Freese posted a career-best eight clean sheets.
His form earned him consistent call-ups to the senior national team. He’s accumulated 16 caps since 2025.
Making history in the opener
On May 26, 2026, Freese was named to the 26-man USMNT squad for the World Cup. He’s the first active MLS goalkeeper to start in goal for the USMNT at a World Cup. He’s also the first Harvard alumnus to appear in a World Cup match for the US.
Standing 6’3″, Freese has the physical profile that modern goalkeeping demands. He also holds German citizenship through his father.
What this means for American soccer
For MLS, this is a legitimacy moment. Outfield players have made the case for MLS development with increasing frequency, but the goalkeeper position has been a stubborn holdout.
Freese’s journey is a case study in non-linear career paths. He went to college, where he studied economics and even investigated the intricacies of penalty kicks for a research project. He sat on benches. He switched clubs. He broke through in his mid-twenties. At 27, Freese’s eight clean sheets in 2025 and his World Cup debut suggest both consistency and temperament suited to the occasion.
