Barcelona and Inter Miami discuss tribute match for Lionel Messi in 2027 after Spotify Camp Nou renovations
The greatest player to ever wear a Barcelona shirt left in 2021 without a proper goodbye, and both clubs want to fix that
Lionel Messi never got a farewell at Camp Nou. He left Barcelona in August 2021 amid a financial crisis that forced the club to let its greatest ever player walk away, crying at a press conference, without so much as a final lap around the pitch. Now, both FC Barcelona and Inter Miami are in discussions to give him one.
The proposed plan: a tribute match in 2027, once renovations to the Spotify Camp Nou are complete. Messi would reportedly play one half for each club, splitting time between the team that made him and the team that gave him a soft landing in South Florida.
What we know about the tribute match
The discussions center around the Joan Gamper Trophy, Barcelona’s traditional pre-season friendly event. Inter Miami would serve as the visiting club, creating a natural framework for Messi to represent both sides in a single match.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta and Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas have both expressed strong interest in making this happen. Mas has reportedly been committed to facilitating a Barcelona return for Messi since October 2023, well before any formal talks gained traction.
The emotional groundwork was arguably laid on November 10, 2025, when Messi made a private visit to the partially renovated Spotify Camp Nou. That visit appears to have intensified the desire on all sides to turn this from a nice idea into an actual event on the calendar.
The talks remain fluid. No official date has been locked in, and the timing depends heavily on the stadium renovation timeline, with full capacity projected for 2027.
Why this matters beyond the pitch
Barcelona’s stadium literally has “Spotify” in the name. The club has been one of the most aggressive in European football when it comes to commercial partnerships with tech companies. It previously partnered with blockchain platform Chiliz to launch its fan token, BAR, which trades on multiple exchanges and has historically seen volume spikes around major club announcements.
Neither club has announced any crypto-specific initiatives tied to this potential match. But the infrastructure is already in place on both sides for exactly that kind of activation, and the timeline gives both organizations nearly two years to build something.
The bigger picture for sports tokens and fan engagement
Fan tokens like BAR, PSG, and others on the Socios platform have historically traded on emotion, club performance, and major announcements rather than any underlying revenue model. When Messi originally left Barcelona in 2021, the BAR fan token saw significant trading interest as fans processed the news.
But investors should approach any such movement with clear eyes. Fan tokens remain speculative instruments with limited utility beyond voting on minor club decisions like kit designs or stadium playlists. They are not equity. They do not entitle holders to revenue sharing.
