Mexico taps Rafael Márquez as head coach, and the sports-crypto sponsorship pipeline is watching
The legendary defender's appointment to lead El Tri toward the 2030 World Cup arrives as crypto firms increasingly circle major football properties for branding deals.
Rafael Márquez, one of the most decorated players in Mexican football history, has been named head coach of the Mexico national team. The Mexican Football Federation made the announcement on July 8, positioning the former Barcelona defender as the man to guide El Tri through the 2030 World Cup cycle.
Márquez replaces Javier Aguirre, under whom he had been serving as assistant coach. The transition comes after Mexico’s loss to England, a result that accelerated the changing of the guard at the top of the program.
From assistant to the big chair
The FMF has been running what it calls “Project 2030,” a long-term strategic plan designed to build continuity in the coaching setup. Márquez’s time as Aguirre’s assistant was essentially an apprenticeship, with the federation wanting him to learn the operational side of managing a national team before handing him the reins.
Mexico co-hosted the 2026 World Cup, an event that raised domestic expectations for the program to unprecedented levels. Márquez captained El Tri across multiple World Cups during his playing career and spent years at FC Barcelona. That pedigree gives him immediate credibility in a locker room that will need rebuilding.
