Morocco edges Canada 1-0 at the World Cup as crypto prediction markets nail the outcome
Polymarket bettors had Morocco as favorites with 55% implied probability, and the Atlas Lions delivered on cue in Houston
Morocco knocked Canada out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory in Houston on July 4, and crypto prediction markets were nodding along the whole time. Azzedine Ounahi scored the decisive goal in the 50th minute, assisted by Achraf Hakimi, sending Morocco into the quarterfinals.
Before kickoff, Polymarket had Morocco pegged at roughly 55% implied probability to win.
A scrappy affair settled by one goal
The first half was more yellow cards than actual shots on target. The referee handed out six cautions before the break, while the two sides combined for just five shots on goal.
The second half brought the only goal that mattered. Hakimi, the Paris Saint-Germain fullback, threaded a pass to Ounahi, who finished in the 50th minute.
For Canada, the loss marks another World Cup exit at the hands of Morocco. The two teams met during the 2022 World Cup group stage in Qatar, where Morocco also came away with a win. That tournament saw Morocco make a historic run to the semifinals.
Morocco now advances to face the winner of France versus Paraguay.
Prediction markets had the receipts
Polymarket’s pre-match contracts gave Morocco a 55% implied probability of advancing, making them modest favorites.
Coinbase Predictions also offered contracts tied to specific in-game metrics for the match, allowing users to wager not just on outcomes but on granular details within the 90 minutes.
FIFA’s blockchain play and the token gap
Neither Morocco nor Canada currently has a dedicated national team crypto token.
FIFA has been working with Avalanche for its blockchain infrastructure, building out digital collectibles and engagement tools on the network. The organization also has ties to Chiliz, the company behind Socios.com and the fan governance token ecosystem that has signed up dozens of major football clubs worldwide.
Club-level fan tokens for teams like Barcelona, PSG, and Juventus have existed for years through the Chiliz ecosystem. Country-level equivalents, where fans could vote on minor team decisions or access exclusive content, haven’t materialized at scale.
What crypto investors should watch
The Avalanche ecosystem is worth monitoring. FIFA’s partnership puts AVAX-based infrastructure in front of a global audience measured in billions.
Chiliz’s CHZ token historically correlates with major football moments, and a World Cup quarterfinal stage featuring potential upsets could produce narrative-driven trading activity.
