Nico Schlotterbeck ruled out of 2026 World Cup after ankle injury against Côte d’Ivoire
Germany's starting centre-back faces months on the sidelines after suffering a medial collateral ligament injury at halftime of the group-stage clash
Germany’s World Cup defense just got a lot more complicated. Nico Schlotterbeck, one of Julian Nagelsmann’s most reliable starters at centre-back, will miss the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after sustaining a medial collateral ligament injury to his left ankle during the group-stage match against Côte d’Ivoire on June 21.
The German Football Association confirmed the news on June 22, making official what the halftime substitution had already suggested: Schlotterbeck is out, not just for one match, but for the rest of the tournament and several months beyond it.
What happened against Côte d’Ivoire
Schlotterbeck did not return for the second half of the Côte d’Ivoire match, replaced at the interval by Antonio Rüdiger. The timing was brutal. Germany had already secured six points from their opening two group games, with Schlotterbeck playing a pivotal role in the 7-1 demolition of Curaçao in the tournament opener.
Nagelsmann acknowledged the loss of Schlotterbeck’s playmaking ability as significant for how Germany approach their defensive shape.
Germany still in a strong position, but the squad feels it
Six points from two group matches puts them in a commanding position heading into the knockout rounds, and their next opponent is Ecuador.
Schlotterbeck himself addressed the situation publicly, acknowledging he needed time to process the injury while urging supporters to keep their focus on the team.
What this means for Germany’s knockout run
For Schlotterbeck personally, the timeline is harsh. A severe MCL injury at 26, mid-tournament, during what should have been one of the defining moments of his international career, is genuinely difficult to process. His club side Borussia Dortmund will also be monitoring the recovery timeline closely, given how central he has been to their defensive setup in the Bundesliga.
