Oxford United appoints Aaron Ramsey as new head coach
The former Arsenal and Wales midfielder takes his first permanent managerial role after retiring from playing this season
Aaron Ramsey is swapping his boots for a clipboard, and he is doing it in League One.
Oxford United confirmed the appointment of the former Arsenal and Wales midfielder as their new head coach on June 23, 2026, handing him the first permanent managerial role of his career.
The move comes just days after Oxford parted ways with Matt Bloomfield, who was sacked on June 20-21, 2026.
From player to manager: a career in transition
Ramsey retired from professional football after the 2025-26 season, closing the chapter on a playing career that stretched across nearly 20 years.
He came through the academy at Cardiff City before joining Arsenal, where he became a fan favorite and a central figure in the club’s midfield for years. He won FA Cup medals, earned well over 60 caps for Wales, and was part of the Welsh squad that made a historic run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016. Later stints at Juventus, Rangers, Nice, and Cardiff marked the later chapters of his career.
Ramsey served as interim head coach at Cardiff City in 2025, taking charge for three matches. That brief spell gave him a first look at the other side of the technical area.
What Oxford United are working with
Oxford United compete in EFL League One, the third tier of English football.
What to watch going forward
His backroom staff appointments will be telling. First-time permanent managers often lean heavily on experienced assistants to fill the gaps in their own knowledge.
