USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino exits press conference after Turkey loss
The US lost 3-2 to Turkey but still topped Group D at the 2026 World Cup, a nuance Pochettino wanted everyone to remember
Mauricio Pochettino had just watched his team lose 3-2 to Turkey at SoFi Stadium. He was also, by every technical measure, having a very good World Cup. The USMNT topped Group D despite the defeat. Pochettino wanted to talk about that. The press corps, apparently, did not.
So the Argentine coach did what coaches rarely do at FIFA-mandated press conferences: he left early. “I need to remind everyone we won the group, sorry guys, we won,” Pochettino said before walking out, describing certain media questions as “weird” and “petty.”
A calculated loss at SoFi Stadium
The June 25 match in Inglewood, California, was never supposed to be a must-win. The USMNT had already secured its path through Group D, and Pochettino treated the Turkey fixture accordingly. He rolled out nine new starters, a wholesale rotation that signaled confidence in the squad’s depth and a desire to keep key legs fresh for the knockout rounds.
Christian Pulisic started the match but was substituted during the game. His removal shifted the team’s attacking dynamic noticeably.
The press conference that wasn’t
The post-match press conference, held on June 26 at SoFi Stadium, was where things got tense. Reporters pressed Pochettino on the loss, on the performance, on what the defeat said about the team’s readiness for tougher opponents ahead.
Pochettino’s mood, by his own description, was “happy.” He had just guided the US to first place in their World Cup group on home soil. The reporters in the room saw it differently. Pochettino criticized the line of questioning, called it petty, reminded the room of the group-stage result that actually mattered, and walked out.
What this means for the USMNT going forward
Nine changes to a starting lineup is aggressive rotation by any standard. It suggests Pochettino has genuine trust in his bench players, or at least that he views the knockout rounds as a fundamentally different tournament from the group stage.
Pulisic’s substitution is worth monitoring closely. Whether it was a precautionary move to protect his fitness or a response to something observed during the match will become clearer as the tournament progresses.
