Real Madrid considers selling young defender Raul Asencio this summer
The Mourinho effect is already reshaping Real Madrid's squad, and a once-promising academy product may be the first casualty
Not long ago, Raul Asencio looked like the kind of homegrown success story Real Madrid loves to tell. A 22-year-old centre-back from the Castilla academy, thrust into first-team action during an injury crisis, racking up 29 appearances in the 2025 season. The club rewarded him with a contract extension in March 2025. Now, barely a year later, the conversation has shifted from “how do we keep him” to “what can we get for him.”
Real Madrid is reportedly weighing a summer sale of Asencio, a decision driven largely by the seismic shift in squad management since Jose Mourinho took charge. The Portuguese manager has reportedly favored other young prospects from the Castilla pipeline, leaving Asencio’s minutes to dry up considerably in the 2026 season.
From breakthrough to benchwarmer
In 2025, Asencio was a revelation. With senior defenders sidelined by injuries, the 1.84-metre centre-back seized his opportunity, making 29 appearances and proving he could handle the intensity of top-level football. He was rewarded accordingly, with the club extending his deal through at least 2029, and some reports suggesting the terms stretch all the way to 2031.
That extension came with a release clause of €100 million, a figure that signaled Real Madrid viewed him as a long-term asset, not a stopgap solution.
Since Mourinho’s arrival, Asencio’s role has diminished sharply. His total appearance count for the club sits at just 34, meaning he has added only a handful of games in the current campaign compared to his breakout year.
What this means for Asencio’s market value
Back in summer 2024, before Asencio had even made his professional debut, the City Group submitted a bid of $6.3 million. Both the player and the club rejected it, betting on his development and future value.
The €100 million release clause is essentially irrelevant in practical terms. No club is paying that for a defender with 34 total appearances. It exists as a contractual formality, not a realistic price tag. The actual transfer fee, if a sale materializes, will be negotiated well below that figure.
For context, the $6.3 million City Group bid from 2024 was made before Asencio proved himself at the senior level. Asencio is only 22, with a contract that gives any buying club years of control.
