Bukayo Saka says England must adapt after Jarrel Quansah’s two-match World Cup ban
England's winger calls for squad unity as Thomas Tuchel faces a defensive reshuffle ahead of the quarter-final against Norway.
England’s 2026 World Cup run just got more complicated. Jarrel Quansah picked up a straight red card in the 54th minute of England’s round-of-16 win over Mexico, and FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee handed down a two-match suspension on July 9, ruling him out of both the quarter-final against Norway and a potential semi-final.
Bukayo Saka addressed the situation directly, saying the team needs to adapt quickly and field a squad that is ready for what comes next.
What happened against Mexico
England beat Mexico 3-2 in a round-of-16 match. Quansah’s studs-up challenge on Mexican player Jesus Gallardo triggered a VAR review, and the referee produced a straight red, reducing England to ten men for the final stretch of the game.
The England FA confirmed it has no grounds to appeal the decision.
Two matches at this stage of a World Cup is not a minor inconvenience. The quarter-final against Norway is already a serious test, and a potential semi-final beyond that means Quansah would miss England’s two biggest games before a possible final.
Tuchel’s defensive options
Saka said the team needs to choose a ready team, which is diplomatic language for: someone else is stepping up, and everyone needs to be fine with that.
If England beat Norway, Quansah would still miss a semi-final. That means England could potentially reach a World Cup final without their suspended defender having played a single minute of knockout football since Mexico.
