Samsung Electronics America cutting 739 jobs in New Jersey as tech layoffs keep rolling
The South Korean tech giant's US subsidiary is trimming its workforce in another sign that big tech restructuring hasn't slowed down.
Samsung Electronics America is planning to lay off 739 workers in New Jersey, adding to a relentless drumbeat of tech-sector job cuts that have defined the past two years.
The layoffs were disclosed through what appears to be a regulatory filing, likely tied to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. That federal law requires companies with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days’ advance notice before mass layoffs or plant closures.
Beyond the headcount figure and the New Jersey location, Samsung has kept its cards close. There’s been no public statement about severance packages, no effective date, and no indication of which facilities or departments will be affected.
Samsung Electronics America serves as the US arm of the South Korean conglomerate, which spans consumer electronics, semiconductors, mobile devices, and display technology. New Jersey has long been a hub for the company’s American operations, housing various business units and administrative functions.
The semiconductor industry in particular has been navigating a complex landscape. Demand cycles for chips have been volatile, with AI-related chip demand surging while other segments like smartphones and consumer electronics have seen softer growth.
Samsung Electronics trades on the Korea Exchange and is one of the most widely held stocks in emerging market funds. The lack of detail surrounding these cuts makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions about whether this is an isolated efficiency move or the beginning of a deeper restructuring at one of the world’s largest technology companies.
