Sentinels secures first international League of Legends victory at EWC26
The North American organization's jungler HamBaK earned MVP honors after taking down APAC powerhouse Team Secret Whales in a best-of-one upset
Sentinels, the esports organization best known for its VALORANT dominance, just picked up a win that’s been a long time coming. The North American squad defeated Team Secret Whales in a Best of 1 match at the Esports World Cup 2026 on July 15, claiming their first-ever international victory in League of Legends.
The match and what made it matter
Sentinels’ jungler HamBaK, a South Korean talent who has been steadily building his reputation, was named the match MVP for his performance against Team Secret Whales. The win carries extra weight when you consider who was on the other side of the Rift.
Team Secret Whales, a joint venture formed in late 2024 through a partnership between Team Whales and Team Secret, arrived at the EWC26 riding serious momentum. At the Mid-Season Invitational 2026, TSW became the first team from the APAC region to defeat a Chinese squad in a best-of-five series, knocking off TOP Esports in a result that sent shockwaves through the competitive League of Legends community.
Sentinels earned their spot at the tournament by going undefeated through regional qualifiers.
The shifting landscape of competitive League of Legends
The APAC region’s rise, highlighted by Team Secret Whales’ MSI breakthrough, has introduced a new variable into the competitive landscape. The region is producing talent and organizational infrastructure capable of competing with, and beating, traditional powerhouses.
The Esports World Cup itself has become a significant fixture on the competitive calendar, featuring substantial prize pools and Club Championship points that incentivize organizations to field their best rosters.
What this means for esports investment and the crypto-gaming intersection
For the crypto and blockchain gaming sector specifically, the expanding esports audience represents an untapped demographic. Esports fans skew young, digitally native, and comfortable with concepts like digital ownership and in-game economies. These are the same characteristics that define early crypto adopters.
Several blockchain gaming projects and crypto-native sponsors have already begun circling competitive esports as a marketing channel. As organizations like Sentinels build international credibility across multiple titles, their value as brand partners increases. A team that wins in VALORANT and now competes meaningfully in League of Legends on the international stage offers multi-game exposure that few esports organizations can match.
