Spain sets World Cup defensive record as crypto and football grow closer than ever
Six consecutive clean sheets and 609 minutes without conceding a goal, all while FIFA's first crypto exchange partner watches from the sidelines
Spain just did something no national team has ever done in World Cup history. The defending Euro 2024 champions went 609 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal, shattering Switzerland’s previous record of 559 minutes that had stood since 2010.
The streak, by the numbers
Spain’s defensive wall held firm through six consecutive clean sheets, another first in World Cup history. The run stretches all the way back to the 2022 World Cup, when goalkeeper Unai Simón last conceded against Japan. Every minute of the 2026 tournament so far has been played without Spain’s goal being breached.
The milestone was cemented during Spain’s 1-0 Round of 16 victory over Portugal on July 6. Mikel Merino provided the only goal.
Switzerland had held the previous record of 559 minutes across multiple tournaments from 1994 to 2010.
The defensive architecture behind this feat centers on a backline featuring Pau Cubarsà and Aymeric Laporte, operating under coach Luis de la Fuente’s tactical system.
FIFA’s crypto moment arrives
Kraken was named the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter for the 2026 tournament in June, marking the first time FIFA has entered into this kind of sponsorship deal.
Spain’s national team fan token, SNFT, has seen notable price gains that correlate with the team’s on-field dominance.
What this means for crypto investors
For traders, fan tokens tied to tournament performance create a unique, if risky, opportunity. The correlation between Spain’s results and SNFT price movement suggests that tokens linked to teams still competing in the knockout rounds could see increased volatility. A surprise elimination could crater a token’s value just as quickly as a deep run inflates it.
