Sparrow Bitcoin wallet faces macOS termination after June 30 due to Apple decision
Apple flagged the open-source Bitcoin wallet's developer account over a placeholder app meant to warn users about scam clones, not deceive them
Craig Raw built one of the most respected self-custody Bitcoin wallets in the ecosystem. Apple is about to kick him off macOS for trying to protect his users from scammers.
Raw announced on June 22 that Apple has flagged his developer account for termination, with a June 30 deadline. The trigger: a placeholder app Raw submitted to the App Store designed to warn users that over a dozen fraudulent “Sparrow” apps were stealing people’s funds. Apple classified this warning app as “dishonest activity.” The actual dishonest activity, the impersonator apps draining wallets, apparently didn’t register with the same urgency.
The scam problem Apple won’t fix
Sparrow Wallet is a desktop-only, open-source Bitcoin wallet available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It has no official mobile version.
Yet since 2023, more than a dozen fake apps bearing the Sparrow name have popped up on Apple’s App Store. These aren’t subtle knockoffs with slightly different logos. They’re outright impersonators targeting users searching for a legitimate Bitcoin wallet, and some victims have reported losing their life savings.
Raw holds trademarks for Sparrow. He has been alerting Apple to the fraudulent apps since early 2024. The scam apps kept appearing. Users kept losing money.
So Raw tried a different approach. He submitted a placeholder app to the App Store, not as a functioning wallet, but as a warning beacon. The idea was simple: if someone searches “Sparrow Wallet” on the App Store, they’d find Raw’s legitimate listing telling them the real wallet is desktop-only and that the other results are scams.
Apple’s review team saw this differently. Rather than recognizing the app as a defensive measure from a trademark holder trying to protect consumers, Apple categorized it as dishonest. And now Raw’s entire developer account faces termination.
What termination actually means for macOS users
Sparrow Wallet isn’t distributed through the App Store. It’s a desktop application that users download directly. But Apple’s developer account system underpins the code-signing and notarization process that allows apps to run smoothly on macOS.
If Raw’s developer account is terminated, new users won’t be able to install Sparrow Wallet on macOS without jumping through Gatekeeper bypass hoops. Existing users will stop receiving updates. The wallet won’t vanish from existing Macs overnight, but it’ll slowly become a security liability as it can no longer be maintained for macOS users.
For a wallet that emphasizes security, privacy, and usability, featuring hardware wallet support, partially signed Bitcoin transactions (PSBT), and detailed transaction labeling, this is a serious blow. Windows and Linux versions remain unaffected.
What this means for Bitcoin holders
If you’re a current Sparrow Wallet user on macOS, the immediate risk is limited. Your wallet, your keys, and your Bitcoin aren’t going anywhere on June 30. But without updates, security patches, and proper code signing, running Sparrow on macOS becomes progressively riskier over time.
Community members on social media have rallied behind Raw, urging Apple to reverse the decision before the June 30 deadline. The deadline leaves Apple a narrow window to reconsider before the termination takes effect.
