UN launches AI trust initiative, and crypto’s AI sector should be paying attention

UN launches AI trust initiative, and crypto’s AI sector should be paying attention

The ITU's new AI for Good Global Commission brings together heads of state and tech CEOs to govern AI agents, with implications that could ripple into decentralized AI projects.

The International Telecommunication Union just assembled a who’s-who of global power players to tackle one of tech’s thorniest problems: getting people to actually trust AI agents. The AI for Good Global Commission, unveiled on July 2, 2026, is co-chaired by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, and ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin.

The commission has over 40 founding members spanning government officials, industry leaders, and UN agencies. Its mandate is broad but pointed: make AI more accessible while keeping trust, accountability, and responsible innovation at the center of the conversation.

The commission’s focus specifically encompasses interactions among people, data, applications, and AI agents across the entire AI value chain. AI agents, the autonomous software systems that can execute tasks, make decisions, and interact with other agents on behalf of users, are becoming central to everything from financial trading to supply chain management.

The commission sits alongside the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, known as ODET, which was established on January 1, 2025, as the UN’s primary body for digital coordination. ODET helped launch the AI Governance for Humanity Lab on May 28, 2026, in Valencia, Spain, and continues to push forward the Global Digital Compact, which was adopted in 2024 as part of the UN’s broader digital strategy. A preliminary report from the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI was also released in July 2026.

No major crypto-native outlets have reported on the initiative. The commission’s emphasis on the AI value chain, specifically the interactions between agents, data, and applications, maps directly onto the architecture of decentralized AI projects.

The Global Digital Compact was adopted in 2024. ODET was established in early 2025. The AI Governance for Humanity Lab launched in mid-2026. The commission arrived weeks later. This isn’t a one-off announcement. It’s a deliberate, accelerating buildout of governance infrastructure.
