US projectiles strike areas around Iran’s Qeshm Island as Strait of Hormuz tensions escalate
Military strikes near the world's most important oil chokepoint could ripple through energy markets and push investors toward safe-haven assets including Bitcoin
Between 10 and 11 projectiles, believed to be launched by US forces, struck areas around Qeshm Island in southern Iran on July 14, hitting what appear to be military sites on one of the most strategically sensitive pieces of real estate on the planet.
Local authorities reported no casualties and no damage to residential or commercial areas. But the location of these strikes matters far more than the immediate blast radius. Qeshm Island sits in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes every single day.
What happened and why it matters
The strikes occurred at approximately 19:00 local time and represent the latest in a series of escalatory exchanges between US and Iranian military forces that have intensified throughout July 2026. Reports indicate this was not a one-off event, with previous strikes documented since the preceding Sunday.
The targets appear to have been Iranian military installations linked to prior threats against commercial shipping routes in the region.
