US seeks stability as Trump prepares to meet Xi in September
Jamieson Greer says the upcoming meeting will focus on checking China's homework, not writing new assignments
The upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to centre on maintaining stable bilateral relations and reviewing China’s adherence to existing trade agreements, according to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Rather than pursuing fresh negotiations, the summit will assess Beijing’s implementation of commitments made under last year’s tariff truce, including rare-earth export arrangements.
Greer said China has not fully met US expectations but described ongoing engagement between the two countries as constructive. He also underscored the importance of reducing US dependence on Chinese pharmaceutical inputs, highlighting commitments by 17 companies to reshore production. The Trump-Xi meeting is expected to take place in late September, ahead of the expiration of the current trade agreement.
