Giovanni van Bronckhorst returns to Feyenoord as head coach
The former Eredivisie-winning manager comes back to Rotterdam after a turbulent stint on Liverpool's coaching staff
Giovanni van Bronckhorst is heading back to where it all started. The Dutch coach has signed on as head coach at Feyenoord, the club where he built his managerial reputation before venturing into some of European football’s biggest stages.
The appointment marks a full-circle moment for van Bronckhorst, who first took charge at the Rotterdam club back in March 2015. That earlier stint produced an Eredivisie title in the 2016-2017 season, a KNVB Cup, and four years of consistent competitiveness that put him on the radar of clubs well beyond the Netherlands.
From Rotterdam to Rangers to Liverpool, and back again
After leaving Feyenoord in 2019 following a productive four-year run, he took the reins at Rangers from 2021 to 2022. At Ibrox, he guided the Scottish club to a Europa League final, a result that cemented his credentials on the continental stage.
Then came Liverpool. Van Bronckhorst joined the Anfield coaching staff in July 2025, working alongside former Feyenoord manager Arne Slot. Slot was sacked, and van Bronckhorst departed alongside him in June 2026 after less than a year.
What van Bronckhorst inherits
His involvement with Feyenoord’s coaching setup dates back to 2010, when he joined the staff after retiring as a player. His first managerial appointment at the club came in March 2015, when he was promoted from an assistant role to replace Fred Rutten ahead of the 2015-2016 season.
The crypto sponsorship wrinkle
Knaken, a crypto platform that previously served as a club sponsor, halted operations amid regulatory scrutiny in mid-2026. Van Bronckhorst himself has no connection to digital assets or crypto-related activities at either Feyenoord or Liverpool.
