Riot Games drops VCT CN Stage 2 trailer as esports keeps crypto at arm’s length

Valorant's flagship Chinese tournament continues to operate without any blockchain or Web3 integration, underscoring a persistent divide between traditional esports and crypto

Riot Games just dropped the official trailer for VCT CN Stage 2, the next chapter of competitive Valorant in China. The tournament runs from July 9 to August 23, carries a $250K prize pool, and will see 14 teams battle across two cities. What it won’t feature: anything related to crypto, blockchain, or Web3.

The tournament itself

VCT CN Stage 2 represents the fourth leg of the 2026 Valorant Champions Tour China season. Riot Games is running it alongside TJ Sports and Hero Esports, two organizations deeply embedded in Chinese esports infrastructure.

The group stage kicks off July 9 at the Helong Gymnasium in Changsha, with 14 teams competing in a single round-robin format. That phase wraps up July 26, including playoff seed deciders scheduled for July 24 through 26.

From there, the action shifts to Chengdu for the playoff bracket. The entire event is classified as an S-tier offline tournament, meaning it sits at the top of competitive Valorant’s hierarchy in the region.

Why crypto’s absence matters

China adds another layer of complexity here. The country’s regulatory stance on cryptocurrency remains among the strictest in the world. Running a crypto-integrated esports tournament on the Chinese mainland would be, to put it diplomatically, logistically challenging. Riot and its partners aren’t going to jeopardize a premier tournament by introducing regulatory risk that could shut the whole thing down.
