Wrexham nears appointment of Newcastle’s Steve Nickson as Director of Football
The Hollywood-owned club is poised to land one of English football's most experienced recruitment heads after his 15-year tenure at Newcastle United
Wrexham AFC, the Welsh club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, is closing in on Steve Nickson as its new Director of Football. Nickson, who spent 15 years at Newcastle United and served as the club’s head of recruitment since 2017, informed the Magpies of his departure plans in mid-June 2026.
When news first broke that Nickson was available, West Ham United were among the clubs reportedly interested in his services. Several Championship sides also circled. But by late June, Wrexham had emerged as the frontrunner, reportedly surpassing Birmingham City and other second-tier clubs in the race for his signature.
From St James’ Park to the Racecourse Ground
Nickson’s career at Newcastle began in 2011 when he joined from Blackburn Rovers. He spent his first six years working his way through the scouting infrastructure before being elevated to head of recruitment in 2017, a role that placed him at the center of the club’s transfer strategy. In that capacity, he oversaw scouting operations and contributed to significant player signings across multiple transfer windows. His influence extended beyond first-team acquisitions into youth development pipelines.
His departure from Newcastle appears to have been amicable. Reports from mid-June indicate that conversations about his exit were cordial, suggesting this was a mutual decision rather than a falling out.
Why this matters for Wrexham
No financial details regarding Nickson’s potential appointment have been disclosed, which is standard for backroom hires of this nature. Wrexham still has no official confirmation on the table. But if Nickson does arrive at the Racecourse Ground, he’ll inherit a club with momentum, resources, and a global profile that most Championship sides would trade a lot to replicate.
