Ajax agrees to loan Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona until June 2027
The German goalkeeper ends his 12-year Barcelona chapter on loan as Ajax bets on experience between the posts
Marc-André ter Stegen is heading to Amsterdam. Ajax and FC Barcelona have reached an agreement on a loan deal that will see the German goalkeeper join the Dutch club through June 2027.
Ter Stegen, 34, has been one of Europe’s elite goalkeepers for the better part of a decade.
How the deal came together
Negotiations between the two clubs accelerated through late June 2026, with Ajax submitting a formal proposal centered primarily on the wage structure.
Ajax agreed to cover the majority of ter Stegen’s wages, which made the economics work for a Barcelona side that has been managing its books carefully.
Ter Stegen himself made his position clear early. He approved the move and, according to reports from ESPN and Fabrizio Romano, returned from vacation ahead of schedule to help push the remaining details over the line.
His current contract at Camp Nou runs until 2028, meaning this loan is not a farewell but a detour.
What this means for ter Stegen
Ter Stegen joined Barcelona in 2014, making this potential departure his first in over a decade at the club. He lost his place in the Barcelona lineup and has been searching for a route back to regular football.
Ajax offers something simple but essential: a starting position and a genuine role in a competitive European setup.
Ajax’s calculus
From Ajax’s perspective, this is a statement signing. Manager Míchel and sporting director Jordi Cruyff identified the goalkeeper position as a priority and moved to address it with one of the most decorated keepers available on the market.
