Curacao secures first World Cup point with historic 0-0 draw against Ecuador
Goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves to tie a World Cup record and deliver the tiny Caribbean nation its most significant footballing achievement ever
Curacao, the smallest nation by population to ever reach a World Cup finals, just earned something no one outside the island truly expected: a point.
Goalkeeper Eloy Room turned in the performance of a lifetime on June 20, making 15 saves to hold Ecuador scoreless in a Group E match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Kansas City, Missouri. The 0-0 draw marks the first point in World Cup history for the Caribbean nation of roughly 150,000 people.
Room’s record-tying masterclass
Here’s the thing about 15 saves in a single match: it ties the all-time World Cup record for saves in a 90-minute game since tracking began in 1966. The last goalkeeper to hit that number was Tim Howard, who made 15 saves for the United States against Belgium in the 2014 World Cup round of 16.
Ecuador threw everything at Curacao. The South American side registered 29 shots, 15 of which were on target. They held 73% possession.
Room, a 37-year-old playing for Miami FC, denied Ecuador’s attackers from every angle and distance.
Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece reportedly expressed disbelief after the final whistle. His team controlled the match in every statistical category that usually matters, and walked away with a single point instead of three.
From 7-1 humiliation to historic resilience
Just days before the Ecuador match, Curacao suffered a 7-1 defeat against Germany. But the team coached by Dick Advocaat, the veteran Dutch manager, found a way to regroup.
What this means for Curacao and Group E
Curacao is the smallest country by population to qualify for a World Cup finals. Every match they play at this tournament is already unprecedented. Earning a point, and doing it through a performance this dramatic, cements a moment in the nation’s sporting history.
For Ecuador, the draw is a genuine problem. In a competitive group that includes Germany, dropping points against the tournament’s clear underdog is the kind of result that haunts a team when the final standings are calculated. Beccacece’s squad generated enough chances to win multiple matches, yet converted none against Curacao.
Room’s save count matches Howard’s exactly, but came in a group stage match rather than a knockout round. The statistical achievement is identical.
