LGD Gaming qualifies for The International 2026 after strong comeback
The Chinese esports organization swept through the South American qualifier without dropping a series, punching their ticket to Shanghai after two years away from competitive Dota 2
LGD Gaming is heading back to The International. The storied Chinese esports organization secured its spot at TI 2026 by winning the South American regional qualifier on June 19, defeating PlayTime 3-0 in the grand final to claim the region’s sole ticket to the main event.
The qualifier run was about as dominant as they come. LGD dropped just a single game across the entire tournament, steamrolling through a field of 10 teams from June 15 to June 19.
A familiar name with an unfamiliar roster
LGD returned to Dota 2 in late May 2026 by acquiring the former HEROIC South American roster, which explains why they competed through the SA qualifier rather than through China’s regional gauntlet.
The road to Shanghai
The International 2026 is scheduled for August 13 to August 23 in Shanghai, China.
What this means for the esports and crypto intersection
Major esports events like The International have become increasingly relevant to the crypto ecosystem, even when no specific tokens are directly tied to the teams or tournaments. Crypto-native platforms that facilitate esports betting and prediction markets tend to see engagement spikes around tentpole events.
The qualifier results themselves become data points for these markets. LGD’s dominant run, one map lost across an entire 10-team bracket, establishes them as a team to watch heading into Shanghai.
