Uruguay’s Gimenez benched, Araujo omitted against Saudi Arabia in World Cup opener
Injuries to star defenders Jose Maria Gimenez and Ronald Araujo leave coach Marcelo Bielsa scrambling ahead of Uruguay's 2026 FIFA World Cup debut
Uruguay will be without two of its most important defenders when the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off. Jose Maria Gimenez, the Atletico Madrid center-back, has been benched due to an ankle injury, while Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo has been left out of the squad entirely.
Uruguay’s opening match against Saudi Arabia is scheduled for June 15-16 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and coach Marcelo Bielsa now faces a significant defensive puzzle.
What happened to Araujo and Gimenez
Gimenez’s ankle issue appears to be a case of caution over courage. The staff reportedly decided against risking their experienced defender in the opener, preferring to keep him available for later stages of the tournament.
Araujo’s situation is more concerning. The Barcelona defender has been dealing with muscle discomfort and calf problems that were serious enough to pull him from the national team camp entirely. He has reportedly traveled back to Barcelona for specialized treatment, training separately from the main group.
The pair were also subjects of injury discussions during the 2024 Copa America cycle, making this a recurring theme rather than a sudden shock for Uruguay’s medical staff.
Who fills the gap
Bielsa will likely turn to Sebastian Caceres and Mathias Olivera as potential replacements in the center-back positions.
Olivera, typically deployed as a left-back, would need to shift centrally, which changes the defensive geometry Bielsa had presumably been building toward.
A messy buildup gets messier
The team’s arrival in Miami was reportedly complicated by flight delays caused by administrative issues related to their travel documentation, essentially missing paperwork.
Araujo’s timeline is murkier. Muscle and calf issues that require a player to leave camp and seek separate treatment rarely resolve in a matter of days. Uruguay may need to plan their group stage campaign without him.
