One in five US jobs faces high risk of AI automation, OpenAI finds
OpenAI's new framework analyzing 921 occupations reveals a massive 'capability overhang' where AI can already do far more than companies have adopted.
Growing fears about AI replacing workers are prompting a closer examination of how the technology may reshape employment across the US.
Research from an OpenAI framework released last April indicates that the impact may be less dramatic than some predictions suggest. According to the study, 46% of jobs are likely to see minimal short-term change, while 24% could be restructured as AI alters specific tasks within existing roles.
Meanwhile, AI may also create opportunities. Roughly 12% of roles are expected to expand as lower operating costs and productivity gains increase demand for certain products and services.
The report emphasizes that AI exposure alone does not guarantee job displacement. The extent of disruption will depend on factors such as the continuing need for human judgment and whether increased market demand can compensate for reduced labor requirements.
Rather than eliminating occupations outright, AI is more likely to transform workflows and redistribute tasks, pointing to a more complex labor market transition than some recent studies have suggested.
