Vangrid raises $9M in token round to build spatial data network for physical AI
The Dutch startup wants to turn your smartphone into an edge node for a decentralized 3D mapping grid, backed by HashKey, Animoca Brands, and Crypto.com Capital
Here’s the thing about robots: they’re only as smart as the world they can see. And right now, most of them are functionally blind outside of controlled environments. Vangrid, a Dutch startup, just raised $9M in seed funding to fix that problem by building a decentralized spatial intelligence network that crowdsources 3D mapping data from ordinary smartphones.
The round pulled in a roster of crypto-native investors that reads like a DePIN all-star team: HashKey, Borderless, Crypto.com Capital, Animoca Brands, Gate Labs, and Mapleblock. The capital will go toward expanding edge computing capabilities and developing enterprise tools for what Vangrid calls a “perception grid” for physical AI.
Turning phones into mapping machines
The core idea is deceptively simple. Instead of deploying expensive fleets of specialized vehicles to map the physical world, like Google Street View’s famous camera cars, Vangrid wants to tap into the billions of smartphones already in people’s pockets. Each phone becomes an edge node, capturing high-fidelity 3D spatial data through its cameras and sensors, then processing it on-device before pushing verified data onchain.
CEO Robert Brighton framed the stakes bluntly.
“Without it, billion-dollar robots will remain blind to dynamic human environments.”
Brighton also positioned the company’s ambitions more broadly, saying, “We are the eyes for the next generation of AI.”
The token economy and DePIN angle
Vangrid isn’t just a mapping company that happens to use blockchain. It has a live token economy running on Base, Coinbase’s Layer 2 network. Contributors who supply spatial data earn points that are convertible to tokens at the project’s upcoming token generation event. Settlements happen in USDC, giving the system a stablecoin backbone that separates operational payments from speculative token dynamics.
The VANGRID token already has active contracts on both Ethereum and Base chains, suggesting the team is building infrastructure ahead of the TGE rather than scrambling to deploy it after.
The key differentiator, at least on paper, is the privacy architecture. Vangrid processes data on-device before it touches the network, then uses onchain verification to ensure data integrity.
Defense, robotics, and the enterprise play
Vangrid isn’t limiting itself to consumer applications. The company has established memorandums of understanding with data partners and is actively engaging with defense and robotics platforms. Real-time transactions are already underway, which suggests the network isn’t purely theoretical.
What this means for investors
The DePIN sector has been one of the more narrative-resilient corners of crypto, partly because the projects in it tend to produce something tangible. Vangrid’s USDC settlement layer reinforces this: contributors get paid in stablecoins, not in volatile tokens that might be worth half as much by the time they withdraw.
That said, the project is still pre-TGE, which means the token’s market dynamics remain uncertain. Points-to-token conversion mechanics have been a mixed bag across the industry. The details of Vangrid’s conversion ratio and vesting schedule will matter enormously.
The competitive landscape is also worth watching. Hivemapper already has a functioning decentralized mapping network with dashcam contributors. Vangrid’s edge, if it holds, is the combination of smartphone accessibility, meaning no specialized hardware required, with 3D spatial fidelity and onchain verification.
