Coinbase wins CFTC approval for its derivatives clearinghouse

Coinbase Clearing will enable the company to create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly, with USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.

Coinbase has received CFTC approval to register Coinbase Clearing LLC as a Derivatives Clearing Organization, completing the company’s end-to-end regulated derivatives platform. The infrastructure now spans Coinbase Financial Markets, a Futures Commission Merchant, Coinbase Derivatives, a Designated Contract Market, and Coinbase Clearing, which the company describes as the first USDC-native clearinghouse.

The clearinghouse is designed to use USDC as collateral and provide settlement around the clock. Coinbase said having its own clearing operation will allow it to directly create and settle fully collateralized contracts, potentially enabling faster product development and more efficient operations.

The company will still rely on existing partners for certain offerings, including margined derivatives and its upcoming single-stock perpetuals. Coinbase said the regulatory approval will support its efforts to expand regulated products and develop financial infrastructure for the onchain economy.
