Binance Pay enables USDT spending at PayPay merchants in Japan

Overseas Binance users can now tap into Japan's largest mobile payment network through a QR-code bridge that converts crypto to yen at the point of sale.

Spending stablecoins at a convenience store in Tokyo sounds like something from a crypto maximalist’s fever dream. But it’s about to become reality for roughly 48 million Binance Pay users, thanks to a new partnership with TBCASoft’s HIVEX network that connects digital asset wallets to PayPay, Japan’s dominant mobile payment platform.

The integration, announced in early August 2026, lets eligible overseas users pay with USDT at millions of PayPay-supported merchant locations across Japan. Merchants receive Japanese yen. Users spend crypto. Nobody has to explain blockchain to the cashier.

How the plumbing works

HIVEX acts as the translation layer between Binance Pay and PayPay’s local infrastructure. When a user scans a QR code at a participating merchant, HIVEX processes the conversion from digital assets to yen before the payment reaches the store’s register.

The system supports both customer-presented and merchant-presented QR code formats, covering essentially every way a PayPay transaction can happen at the point of sale. Individual merchants don’t need to make any technical changes or sign up for anything new. If they already accept PayPay, they’re in.

Compliance responsibilities are split cleanly down the middle. Binance Pay handles user-side obligations like KYC verification and sanctions screening. HIVEX and its local partners manage merchant-side regulatory requirements, ensuring adherence to Japanese law.

Japan’s cashless push meets crypto rails

Binance already had a footprint in Japan’s financial ecosystem. Fiat deposit and withdrawal services through Japanese payment channels have been available since 2025, establishing regulatory relationships and technical infrastructure that this new initiative builds upon.

The initial rollout targets Q3 2026, with the 48 million figure representing Binance Pay’s currently eligible user base. Binance’s broader global user base exceeds 300 million accounts, and expansion of eligibility could dramatically increase the pool of people who can spend USDT at Japanese shops.

What this signals for stablecoin utility

HIVEX isn’t new to this game. The network has been facilitating foreign QR wallet payments at PayPay merchants since its launch in 2023, processing transactions from various international mobile payment platforms. Adding Binance Pay extends that same infrastructure to crypto-native users.
